Ceasefire

The Karen National Union (KNU) signed a preliminary ceasefire agreement with the Burma government on 12 January 2012. This ceasefire was part of a broader series of policy changes initiated by the Government, which included a broad political liberalization, as well as an attempt to reach ceasefires with ethnic armed groups throughout the country. Further talks between Government and KNU were held in April & September 2012, and January and in June 2013. Since the ceasefire, KHRG has seen a significant decrease in reports of attacks on civilians and civilian objects, and other abuses that are the direct result of armed conflict. During the same period, KHRG has received many reports of abuses related to economic development, including large scale land grabs, and development projects approved without consulting local communities. KHRG continues to monitor the ceasefire process to determine whether the voices and priorities of villagers in southeastern Burma are being considered.
