Violent abuse

Violent abuse

This category is included in order to give expression to the wide range of violence perpetrated against civilians by military actors which, while falling short of the internationally-accepted legal definition of torture, nonetheless constitute serious abuse, creating lasting physical and psychological effects. Villagers describe being beaten, kicked, struck with rifle butts and knocked unconscious – in some cases while bound or otherwise detained. Because it is not always clear whether the degree of harm caused, or the purpose for which the harm was caused, reach the threshold of torture, such incidents of violent abuse highlight the need for further investigation into the specific circumstances surrounding each incident.
