Landmines

This category includes incidents related to the use of landmines and ongoing landmine and UXO contamination in eastern Burma. Landmines deployed by Tatmadaw, Border Guard and armed ethnic groups troops present severe risks of death or injury to civilians and undermine livelihoods by denying access to cultivable land or preventing grazing. Landmines are rarely marked and infrequent cases of mine removal by armed actors are incomplete and unsystematic. Landmines also present increased risks to villagers facing other forms of abuse, including forced labour and displacement. With regard to UXOs, children are at particular risk as they may not be aware of the dangers a found UXO object presents. Villagers frequently voice concerns or raise issues related to living with the threat of landmines, but they are not the passive victims of an indiscriminate weapon: villagers employ a range of strategies to avoid dangerous mined areas and otherwise address their concerns, including sharing information about the location of mines, using alternative travel routes or livelihoods activities, and marking or removing mines themselves.
