Hpapun Interview: Naw B---, April 201527th January 2017
The above photos taken on April 17th 2015 show the Union Solidarity and Development Party [USDP] holding a ‘Farmers Public Affairs Meeting/Forum’ in Mu Traw [Hpapun Town] assembly hall. They asked the farmers to enter the meeting for listening [to the discussion]. They asked all land owners whose lands were confiscated by Tatmadaw to attend the meeting. They asked villagers from Ss---, Tt---, Uu---, Vv---, ML---, and other villagers to attend the meeting in Mu Traw assembly hall. Before they [villagers] entered the meeting they [USDP] collected [registered] the name of each villager then they distributed small calendars to each of them. They [USDP] said that is the first time for them to hold a ‘Farmers’ Public Affairs Meeting’. During the meeting they explained that farmers are not only the people who work in the farms, it also includes the people who raise [farm] fish, cultivate the land and the people who work on plantations: they are all called farmers. Hpapun area is looked after by [USDP member] U Soin Than Naing and he develops the livelihood [systems] and [upgrades] the road [because] he is a public representative. Even though they held the meeting to meet with villagers they did not ask the villagers the express their opinions. They [USDP] talked among themselves and answered the question amongst themselves. They said they were not going to return the lands or give the compensation for the lands which have been confiscated by Tatmadaw. [Photos: KHRG]
