International Human Rights Day 2016 in Toungoo (Taw Oo) District

Published date:

On December 10th 2016, KHRG organised an International Human Rights Day event in Toungoo (Taw Oo) District. We celebrated the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948. The theme of this year's Human Rights Day was to call on everyone to stand up for someone's rights #StandUp4HumanRights today and every day. See below some photos of the event.

Watch a short video of the event:

KHRG held a large event in Toungoo (Taw Oo) District in locally defined Karen State (southeast Myanmar) where we spread the message and raised awareness on different human rights issues ranging from women's rights, children's rights, land confiscations and the environment, landmines, armed conflict and displacement and much more! KHRG would like to thank Saferworld, National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and The Border Consortium (TBC) for making this possible.

The photos show the stage being set up and several stands being prepared by KHRG, Karen Environmental and Social Action Network (KESAN), the Karen Women Empowerment Group (KWEG), Mine Advisory Group (MAG) and other organisations.

In total there were around 600 attendees to the event.

As a highlight, KHRG handed out awards to community members who have already been 'standing up for someone's rights' to honour and recognise their important work. See below some of the photos taken during the preparations and during the event.
