Oppression by proxy in Thaton District13th March 2014
The first photo shows the dirt track marks the route of the planned Asian Highway which is to cross through Thaton District. The section of roadway shown here was built over rice fields belonging to 60-year-old U M--- of Bee Lin Kyo village, who was given no compensation for the loss of his land. Local villagers were forced to construct both the road and the drainage ditches running alongside. The second photo shows in early 2006, Boh Lweh, a DKBA battalion commander from Brigade #333 came to L--- village, shot 25-year-old Saw B--- (shown here) 30 times in the head with a slingshot and then demanded he porter for the army. The third photo shows the corpse of a convict porter killed by SPDC soldiers in punishment for fleeing from the army patrol he was serving with. He had escaped to a monastery where SPDC soldiers from IB #255 of LID #10 discovered him, detained him and tortured him. On March 31st, following the torture, IB #255 commander Aung Lwin Oo ordered his soldiers to kill him. One non-commissioned officer and five soldiers took the porter out of the village of Dt' Maw Daw, killed him at 8:00 pm and subsequently buried him. The fourth photo shows 57-year-old Saw Y--- from Ler Poh village collects bamboo and partially burned wood in his rice field on April 26th 2006 in an attempt to burn off debris. Soldiers from SPDC IB# 235, under the command of Column #2 deputy commander Zaw Zaw Lin earlier set his field alight before the brush was sufficiently dry - thus leaving the ground littered with branches, shrubs and tree stumps - in order to prevent a successful harvest.
